Scheduled for Monday, July 22, 2024, at 9:30 a.m., is the seminar "Insects as agents for the development of emergent biohybrid systems: a new paradigm for environmental monitoring and management", held by Donato Romano, Assistant Professor at The BioRobotics Institute (Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna).

The initiative is organized by the Institute of Plant Sciences.

Abstract

Insects have evolved behaviors of high order of complexity, although their relatively simple nervous system, allowing them to generate unique networks and communication abilities with other biological systems. Via the use of biomimetic robots and AI techniques, it is possible to develop interactive biohybrid systems where artificial agents and animal exchange information and collaborate together promoting collective emergent phenomena. These approaches can help us to better understand the behavioral ecology and cognitive processes of such organisms, as well as provide innovative solutions for ecosystem management. These biohybrid systems can be exploited to monitor the environment, manage (agro)ecosystems, and controlling pests through ecofriendly methods, contributing to the preservation of biodiversity, and promoting sustainable environmental measures.
